Apologies for being a lazy ass. I havent even finished my CMJ stories, and even that fad is over. But for the sake of good-record keeping and stories to show my grandchildren, here it is: Part 3 of the CMJ Music Marathon 2003

Friday was a wonky day. I was uber tired from the night before-- the Kills had killed me, and now here i was trotting of to the TigerStyle Records Showcase @ The Mercury Lounge. I was hardly off to a good start, I missed Ida which had played an early set--- stood in line long enough to see the people I knew, leave (to watch Gus Van Sant's Elephant, they said. Dammit, so thoroughly tempting too), and longer still to wait for the other kids who had gone to indian row dinner and were coming to see Amanset. I found out i was standing in the wrong line right when we came to the front of it. good thing the door dude was a nice guy and let us in anyway (i of course have to mention how bitter cold it was, for realz!).
We made it right in time for the Album Leaf, a guy on his keyboards/laptop/synth set-up with his guest drummer, was excellent. Dreamy music to sway to. Lucero came on next. urgh. They sounded like Bon Jovi, forget them. Then American Analog Set took the stage, sweet mellow blip bloppy electro smooooth, their music was so trance-inducing (in that good, put-you-in-the-mood way) that I, in my uber state, almost fell asleep standing up. Apologies to Amanset, though i think it might be quite a testament to how soothing their music is.

Mates of State @ the Bowery Ballroom! woohoo! These two are total cutiepies. Probably the sweetest married couple on stage, Corey on her keyboards and Jason on his drums. No guitars at all. how rare is that?
Next, a rockin 2 hour set by Death Cab For Cutie. Ben Gibbard was doing his usual little hip-gyrating dance. i kept half-expecting him to break out into a Postal Service song (where's Jimmy?) but yeah, wrong concert.
